The Constant Reader RI
The Constant Reader RI contains short reviews of books, both recent and older, designed for readers like Virginia Woolf, who once described herself as “’browsing and munching steadily through all kinds of books.’” Reading allowed her to see ‘for a moment how our minds are all threaded together,” producing a “common mind that binds the whole world together.” The suggestion that reading is communal as well as solitary was borne out during my years of teaching, participating in book groups and reviewing. My credentials include a Ph.D. in English literature from Brown University but I consider my greatest qualification to be a lifetime of reading as much as I can whenever I can. Visitors will find neither consistency nor any particular organizing principle. When I’ve read something that seems noteworthy then I will write about it. Visitors can, however, expect concision, honesty and respect for good writing and the power of a unique voice. Books noted will include fiction, memoirs, biography, history, travel literature, and anything else that catches my attention. I look forward to input from readers—suggestions for reviews, reaction to, whatever.
